Highlights: the moments worth remembering
Highlights is a place for the moments worth remembering: a good dinner, a conversation that stayed with you, the first swim of the summer. You score each one for how good it felt, and over time the page shows what kinds of moments, and which people, tend to make your best days.
When to use it
The evening is the natural time, while the day is still fresh. Some people add one every night; others add one when something stands out. Either works.
How to use it
Add a highlight
- Open Highlights from the Review group in the menu.
- Press + Add.
- Fill in:
- Approx date: when it happened. An approximate date is fine.
- Highlight: what happened, in your own words.
- Category: a word for the kind of moment, such as Family, Travel or Nature. You make these up as you go, and ones you've used before are offered as you type.
- With whom: who you were with, if anyone. Also offered from what you've typed before.
- Happiness (−10…10): how good it felt.
- Save. To change one later, click its row.
Look back
The top of the page summarises whatever you're currently looking at:
- Highlights, Average score, Highest category and Highest with tiles.
- Average by category and Average by who with, highest first.
- Score distribution: how many highlights sit at each score.
- By year: how many you logged each year, coloured by that year's average.
Narrow it down
Use the filter card under the charts:
- Click Category or With chips to show only those. Click again to remove.
- Drag the Score slider to a range, for example only the +8s and above. include unscored keeps highlights you didn't give a score.
- Choose a range of Years.
- Clear filters puts everything back.
The charts and tiles follow your filters, so "Average by who with, in 2025, Travel only" is two clicks away. The Search… box above the table finds words in any column.
Tips
- Keep category names short and reuse them. "Family" and "family time" will be counted as two different things.
- The small n beside an average is how many highlights it covers. An average built on two moments is an anecdote, not a pattern.
- Negative scores are allowed. A hard day can still hold a moment worth keeping.
- If you rarely remember the date, a rough one is enough. The year is what the charts use most.
Questions
Is "With whom" linked to my People page? No. It's free text here, so you can write anyone, including people you haven't added to People.
Can I delete a highlight? Yes. Click the row to open it, press Delete, then Really delete? to confirm.
Why is a category missing from "Average by category"? Only scored highlights count toward the averages. If every highlight in that category is unscored, it won't appear there.
Do highlights show up anywhere else? Yes, on Home. When you have a highlight dated exactly one year ago, the A year ago today tile shows it. That's one more reason to give a highlight its real date when you know it.
